This checklist focuses on the federal COPS School Violence Prevention Program (SVPP) and New Jersey's Securing Our Children's Future school-security program. FY2026 SVPP closed August 11, 2026. The latest published NJ school-security round had an application deadline of February 15, 2024 and a grant period ending April 30, 2026. Other federal school-safety programs may fund different project types, so verify current opportunities before planning an application.
Alyssa's Law (P.L.2019, c.33) requires New Jersey public elementary and secondary school buildings to have a silent panic-alarm capability linked directly to law enforcement, or a Department-approved alternative emergency mechanism. Compliance certification also factors into eligibility for the state's Securing Our Children's Future school security funding.
Under FY2026 SVPP, comprehensive review weighed school safety planning and assessment efforts, assessment costs were an allowable expense, and funded recipients were required to complete comprehensive assessments for the schools in the project during the award period — a condition that could be waived where qualifying assessments had been completed or updated within the previous three years. A current written assessment strengthens the planning foundation. Program requirements change each cycle, so confirm the current solicitation.
